Basketball in Pakistan
Chapter 1: Introduction to Basketball in Pakistan
Basketball, though not as popular as cricket, football, or field hockey in Pakistan, has seen a
steady increase in interest and participation over the past few decades. Introduced to the
country by American missionaries and teachers during the early 20th century, the sport
gradually made its way into schools, colleges, and universities across Pakistan. Despite
facing numerous challenges such as lack of infrastructure, financial support, and media
attention, basketball has managed to carve out a niche for itself. Over the years, the game
has gained a devoted following, particularly among the youth in urban areas.
The Pakistan Basketball Federation (PBF), established to govern and promote the sport at
the national level, has been working hard to develop basketball in Pakistan through the
organization of local, regional, and national competitions. However, the sport still faces
significant obstacles, including limited resources and competition from more established
sports.
