Rajasthani Nagara Drums with Nathulal Solanki and sons

English

Nathulal Solanki, the oldest Nagara master in the region of Pushkar, Rajasthan, teaches step-by-step the Rajasthani Nagara language. Just as he learned it, first one learns how to recite the syllables that constitute the rhythmic movement, and then it is applied on the Nagara. The richness of the language is that it is applicable to any musical instrument, considering the established conventions: Keeping the low-pitch timbers and high pitch ones according to the original accents it can be applied in different percussion instruments. Nagara is a drum meant to be played in a group, where the players perform the same rhythmic movement, creating variations and exploring different accents to it. The contexts where Nagara ensembles perform vary from temple ceremonies, weddings and traditional dance performances in Rajasthan. It’s performed as a solo in gateways or as accompaniment for bhajans.
