A variety of concepts, methods and adjuncts have been introduced to enhance the efficacy and effectiveness of clear aligners outcome. However, the predictability of clear aligner treatment have proven to be unsatisfactory with a growing base of literature seeking to get an in-depth look into the variables that affect the clear aligner outcome.

One of the crucial components of orthodontic treatment is the appliance and its material structure.

An important question is, why is there a discrepancy between the expected and potential outcome?

In this presentation, we will unravel the key limitations and drawbacks of aligner-based therapy lookin in-depth into the biomechanical properties of aligner materials (thermoplastic) that affect the clinical performance giving insights into the predictability and effectiveness of aligner therapy, and what does the future hold for the manufacturing process and improvement of the clear aligner materials and the future perspectives of polymers used for aligners including the 3D printed aligners.

This presentation will review the available literature, diving deep into the limitations of the available research and understanding where do we currently stand in our knowledge of clear aligner materials and how can we use it for our benefit for improving the clinical outcome and predictability of clear aligner treatment.
