Basketball in Rwanda

Basketball has grown to become one of the most popular sports in Rwanda, capturing the

hearts of many young athletes and fans. Over the years, Rwanda has made significant

progress in developing its basketball culture, with a growing number of local and

international events being organized, fostering a vibrant sports community. This sport has

Chapter 1: The History of Basketball in Rwanda

Basketball's presence in Rwanda can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s when it was

introduced to the country, largely through educational institutions and expatriates. The sport

was initially played at a small scale, primarily in schools and universities. However, after the

1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, basketball became a symbol of hope, reconciliation, and

unity in the country. Following the tragic events, the sport helped bring communities together
