Course - Molecular Biology: The basis of life.
In this course we will discover the wonderful bases of molecular biology in the practice of clinical medicine.
With special emphasis on genetic mitochondrial disease:
Mitochondrial diseases are a group of heterogeneous multisystem pathologies in which the clinical presentation; genetic, biochemical and histopathological evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction. The alterations may depend on mitochondrial DNA, nuclear DNA alterations or alterations in the communication of the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Its diagnosis requires prior recognition of the clinical presentation and is fundamentally based on muscle biopsy and molecular studies to search for mutations in mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial diseases constitute a challenge for physicians. Mitochondria have their own DNA and when this is damaged, mitochondrial diseases are originated, related to the genesis of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes mellitus. An updated knowledge about these affections allows a better diagnosis and management of these patients, for this reason a review of the current state of the subject in the world literature was carried out.
