It is a disease caused by insufficient production or malabsorption of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose and provides energy to the body. Insulin is a hormone that has the function of breaking down glucose (sugar) molecules into energy for the maintenance of our body's cells. Diabetes can cause blood sugar levels to rise and high blood sugar levels can lead to complications in the heart, arteries, eyes, kidneys and nerves. In severe cases, diabetes can lead to death.
