How To Act in The Face Of An Autism Crisis

English

Seeing an autistic child or person going through a crisis can be scary, especially if you don't know how to act. But with calm, empathy and information, it is possible to help in a safe and welcoming way.

Crises can happen for many reasons: sensory overload, frustration, changes in routine or difficulties in communication. During these moments, the person may cry, scream, get agitated or even hurt themselves.

The main attitude is to remain calm. Avoid speaking loudly, touching without permission or trying to "control" by force. Remove stimuli such as noise, bright light or too many people nearby. If possible, take the person to a quiet and safe place. Use simple language, with short and objective sentences, to show that you are there to help.

Each autistic person is unique, so it is important to know their warning signs and strategies that work for them. With adequate support, crises can be prevented and better understood.

More than taking action, it is essential to learn to welcome.
