You have a nice party to attend to. You sit in front of your laptop and you search for "easy smokey eye" on YouTube. Tons of videos show up, you choose the one with the most views and try to follow the steps. Pretty fast, everything gets out of control and you have black eyeshadow in your cheeks, nose and forehead (and you wonder "how??"). The clock is ticking, you clean up and try again, eventually you might try another video, and when you're already half an hour late you are feeling sad and frustrated, and decide to go with the same combo lipstick + mascara. Ring any bells?

I know that, because I have been there. Countless times. And believe me when I tell you: it's not your fault. The "easy smokey eye" was not that easy after all for a lot of reasons, and I'll break some of them down to you.

First of all, each face is unique. So the same tutorial won't be the most flattering in all faces: in fact, it can be quite the opposite!

Second reason is that YouTubers are not necessarily teachers. They are entertainers. Their main goal is to keep you hung up on the screen for the most minutes. That means that they will not tell you exactly how to hold the brush or how much eyeshadow to pick up all the time.

Third reason: the YouTuber is not seeing YOU. Yes. They can't see how you are replicating the technique, therefore they can not show you how to correctly do it if needed.

I can go on, but you get the point. You are not the only one that couldn't follow "simple" "easy" tutorials, and now you know why.
