UERJ 2025 B PART VI EXTERIOR ALBEBRA FOR APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS
EXTERIOR ALGEBRA FOR MATH \PHYSICS
Course Description
This course develops the fundamental concepts of exterior algebra and differential forms, emphasizing their applications to Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and differential geometry. The objective is to formulate physical laws in a coordinate-independent manner and establish connections between vector calculus, tensor analysis, and differential geometry.
The course begins with the definition of the dual basis, tensors, and covectors, followed by the exterior derivative operator (d) and its fundamental properties. Numerical examples illustrate exterior algebra operations, including wedge products and the relationship between differential forms and the familiar cross product in three-dimensional vector calculus.
The course then examines wedge products involving three and four one-forms, flux forms associated with vector fields, and the formulation of Gauss's Theorem, Green's Theorem, and Stokes' Theorem using differential forms and exterior differentiation. Worked examples demonstrate how these formulations generalize the classical integral theorems of vector calculus.
The final part introduces covariant derivatives of differential forms, including the covariant derivative of a one-form (\omega) and the two-form (d\omega). The Lie derivative is developed in local coordinates, with particular emphasis on its action on one-forms and two-forms and its role in describing the variation of differential forms along the flow generated by a vector field.
