WhatsApp Community: how to create yours and turn your audience into revenue
A WhatsApp Community groups up to 100 chats under one topic, with an admin-only announcements space. Learn how to create yours, its limits and how to earn from it.

What will we see in this post
A WhatsApp Community brings together up to 100 groups and 2,000 members under a single topic, with an announcements space that only admins can use. Whoever creates it decides who joins, which groups exist and what gets announced to everyone.
A WhatsApp Community is an app feature that organizes several groups under one central theme and lets admins send announcements to all members at once. It is not a bigger group or a broadcast channel: it is a layer of organization on top of groups, designed for people who need to talk to a lot of people without turning everything into a single conversation.
For content creators, this solves a practical problem. WhatsApp appears on the home screen of 64.8% of Brazilian smartphones, according to the June 2026 Mobile Time and Opinion Box Super Panorama, up from 53% in the previous year’s measurement. And 97% of users open the app at least once a day, according to Opinion Box’s WhatsApp in Brazil survey of 1,126 people. Your audience is already there every day. The question is what you do with that attention.
In this guide you will see what a community really is, how to create yours step by step, when to use a group, a channel or a broadcast list instead, and how the audience you gather there turns into revenue.
What is a WhatsApp Community?
A WhatsApp Community is the feature that brings together up to 100 groups and up to 2,000 members around a central topic, with an automatically created announcement group where only admins can post. Participants keep chatting in the topic groups, and the community works as the umbrella that organizes all of them.
According to the WhatsApp Help Center, anyone can create a community, adding existing groups or creating new groups by topic. Conversations remain protected by end-to-end encryption, which means not even WhatsApp can read what is sent there.
In practice, people who work with content creation use the community to separate audiences that are currently lumped together. A personal finance creator, for example, can have one group for beginners, another for people who already invest and a third just for course students, all inside the same community and all receiving the same general announcements.
How does a WhatsApp Community work?
A community works in three layers: the community at the top, the topic groups linked to it and the announcement group, which is created automatically and lets the admin talk to everyone at the same time. Anyone who joins a linked group becomes part of the community and receives the announcements, even without joining the other groups.
The hierarchy is easy to picture: community, then groups, then members. A participant can be in several groups of the community or in none, besides the announcement group.
The announcement group
The announcement group is created along with the community and is the only space where a message reaches all members at once. Only admins post there, and other participants can read and react but cannot send messages.
It is the operational heart of the feature for content creators. If you have a class split into five groups and need to announce a live session, the announcement solves it with one post instead of five.
The general group, which is optional
Besides the announcement group, the community can have a general group where admins and members chat freely about community topics. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, this group has a limit of 1,024 members and joining is optional for newcomers.
Think carefully before enabling it, because the general group increases the feeling of a living community but is also where most of the noise comes from. Many creators prefer to start without it and open it only once moderation is defined.
What you control as an admin
The community admin controls four areas: the list of admins, which groups are part of it, who stays in the community and deactivating the whole space. The WhatsApp Help Center details each one:
- Manage admins: promote participants to admins, remove existing ones and edit the community’s name and image.
- Manage groups: choose which groups join, create new ones and remove existing groups.
- Manage participants: report and remove accounts with inappropriate behavior.
- Deactivate the community: an action restricted to whoever created the space.
There is also a privacy detail that matters a lot in a large community: only admins can see the full list of contacts. A regular member sees the number of people who are in the same groups as them, and nothing more.
WhatsApp Community limits
A community holds up to 100 groups and up to 2,000 members in total, counting subgroups and the announcement group. The numbers below come from the WhatsApp Help Center and were verified in July 2026.
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Groups per community | 100 |
| Members per community (subgroups + announcements) | 2,000 |
| Participants per group | 1,024 |
| Members in the general group | 1,024 |
| Characters in the community name | 100 |
| Contacts per broadcast list | 256 |
| Participants in a group voice call | 32 |
| Shared file size | 2 GB |
How to create a WhatsApp Community
To create a WhatsApp Community, open the Communities tab, tap New community, give it a name of up to 100 characters, write a description and add groups. The process takes less than two minutes and does not require a special account: any app user can do it.
- Open the Communities tab: on Android, it is at the top of the chats screen. On iPhone, it is in the bottom bar;
- Tap New community and then Get started;
- Name the community: the limit is 100 characters. Use the name your audience already knows you by, not an internal acronym;
- Write the description: it is what people read before deciding to join. Say the topic, who it is for and how often you post;
- Add an image: it can be a photo, emoji, sticker or an image of your brand. It appears next to the name in the chat list;
- Add the groups: you can create new groups by topic or attach groups you already manage. People already in those groups automatically become part of the community;
- Invite participants: by invite link or by adding contacts manually.
One detail that saves rework: create the groups around your product ladder, not around your content. Groups split by audience stage (people just starting, people who already bought, people ready for the next step) perform better than groups split by blog post topic. If you are still defining what to offer, start with what digital products are and which types exist.
How to create a Community on WhatsApp Business
You cannot create a community in the WhatsApp Business app. The WhatsApp Help Center states that the feature is not available in the business version of the app. With a Business account, you can join existing communities but not open your own.
If you use Business and want a community, there are two practical paths:
- Create the community on a regular WhatsApp number, separate from your customer service number. This is the path most creators use: they keep Business for one-on-one support and a dedicated regular number for the community.
- Use the features Business already offers for what a community would do: broadcast lists for announcements, labels to segment contacts, a catalog and automatic messages for customer service.
If your goal is to sell, remember that the choice between Business and regular WhatsApp is not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is the sales funnel: where people enter, what they receive at each stage and when the offer appears.
How to turn your community into revenue
A WhatsApp Community has no payment system: it concentrates and warms up the audience, and the sale happens outside it, on a platform that generates the payment link, processes the purchase and delivers the product. Understanding this division of roles is what separates a community that generates revenue from a group that only generates notifications.
The data behind this path: according to the study The socioeconomic impact of Creator Economy digital businesses in Brazil, by FGV in partnership with Hotmart, 42% of the creators surveyed say selling digital products is their main source of income, with revenue higher than their other activities. The survey covered 612 creators who sell on the platform.
Read that number honestly: it describes people who already have a product live and an audience built, not someone who opened a community last week. For beginners, the value of the community in the first months is not sales, it is finding out what your audience asks most often. That repeated question is usually the first product.
There are four monetization paths that work from a WhatsApp Community.
1. A digital product sold to the community base
The most direct path is to create a product that answers the question that repeats most in the community and offer it there. The community has already delivered the market research for free: the members’ questions are the brief.
It can be an ebook for a specific question, a course for a longer problem or a group mentorship for people who want guidance. If you have nothing ready yet, the next step is learning how to sell digital products before thinking about ads.
Offering inside the community has an advantage paid ads do not: these people already know you. It also has a drawback nobody warns you about: the base is finite. A community of 2,000 people does not support a monthly launch; it supports a well-made offer once in a while, with useful content in between.
2. Subscription club and members area
If your content is recurring, the model that fits a community is a subscription, not one-off sales. The logic is simple: people already follow you every day on WhatsApp, so the consumption habit exists. Only the paid layer is missing.
In practice, it works like this: the free community is the top, open to anyone interested in the topic, and the subscription club is the closed layer, with in-depth material, live sessions and direct access to you. WhatsApp stays the place for relationship, and the members area is the place for delivery.
This separation also protects you. Paid content inside WhatsApp is content any member can forward in two taps.
3. Affiliate program
If you do not have your own product yet, you can monetize the community by promoting other people’s products and earning a commission per sale. It is the fastest path for people who have an audience and nothing produced yet.
It is worth understanding how the affiliate program works before you start, because community logic differs from ad logic: here the recommendation carries your name. Promoting anything that pays well costs the trust that took months to build. The rule that tends to work is to recommend only what you would use yourself.
4. Sponsorship and partnerships
A community with a well-defined audience becomes media space for brands that want to reach that specific niche. What is sold here is not size, it is precision.
A community of 800 people who work in wedding photography is worth more to an equipment brand than a generic list of 20,000 contacts. Anyone who has already defined a micro-niche well has this asset ready and often does not even notice.
Where does the sale actually happen?
None of the four paths happens inside WhatsApp. The conversation happens there; the payment happens on a digital products platform. The journey is always the same: you publish content in the community, the offer appears, the person clicks a link, pays at a checkout and receives access automatically.
Hotmart, a platform that brings together creation, sales, payment and delivery of digital products in one place, exists to cover exactly that part of the journey. Signing up is free and there is no monthly fee: the platform only earns when you sell. You can see how Hotmart pricing works before you start.
Flow summary: WhatsApp Community for relationship and warm-up → payment link for the transaction → members area for delivery → affiliate program if you want other people to promote as well.
Benefits of a WhatsApp Community for content creators
The main benefit of a community is reaching your entire base without depending on an algorithm: the announcement arrives as a notification on each member’s device. In a scenario where organic reach on social networks is decided by third parties, that counts for a lot.
Closer contact with your audience
The community puts you in the same place where people talk to family and friends. The tone of the conversation changes, and the relationship built there is different from the one you have with someone who only comments on a post.
Exclusive content as a reason to stay
Material that exists only in the community gives people a concrete reason not to leave. It can be an early notice, a short lesson or a behind-the-scenes look at something you are building. The rule is that it is not available on any other channel of yours.
Fast audience feedback
A poll in the community returns results in hours. That shortens the decision cycle on content topics, product format and even price, with no need for formal research.
A network among members
Networking, meaning building a network of professional contacts, happens naturally in topic groups. Members exchange ideas, refer work to each other and come to associate that value with your community. If you want to encourage it on purpose, set up a few structured moments, such as introduction threads or monthly meetups.
Organizing audiences at different stages
People just starting and people who already bought need different content. The community lets you separate the two into groups and still talk to both when the announcement is general.
A path to monetization
This is the benefit that only shows up after the others. An engaged, organized base used to receiving useful content is a base that listens to an offer without feeling invaded.
How to keep your WhatsApp Community active
An active community is the result of a predictable rhythm and a defined agenda, not of message volume. Posting every day with no purpose tires people faster than posting twice a week with content they look forward to.
- Set a fixed calendar: if the community knows new material comes out every Tuesday, opening it becomes a habit.
- Use polls to bring the audience in: asking which topic comes next week costs nothing and returns a ready-made agenda.
- Hold live sessions: online events exclusive to the community are the format that creates the most sense of belonging, because they require presence.
- Recognize who participates: highlighting a member’s contribution in the announcement costs one line and changes the behavior of the whole group.
- Stay quiet when there is nothing to say: too many notices train people to ignore them. Save the general announcement for what really matters.
- Have moderators: beyond a few hundred members, moderating alone is no longer possible.
How does Hotmart complement your WhatsApp Community?
The community takes care of the relationship; the platform takes care of the sale, the delivery and the payment. If you have made it this far and want to build the part WhatsApp does not do, these are the pieces that fit together.

Frequently asked questions
How many people fit in a WhatsApp Community?
A WhatsApp Community holds up to 2,000 members in total, counting the participants of all subgroups and the announcement group. Each group inside it accepts up to 1,024 people, and the community can bring together up to 100 groups. The 5,000 figure that still circulates in many articles comes from the feature's original announcement in 2022 and does not match the limit currently stated by the WhatsApp Help Center.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp Community and a Channel?
In a community, participants talk to each other inside groups; in a channel, only the admin posts and followers can only react. A community has a cap of 2,000 members and organizes audiences into topic groups. A channel has no published follower limit and is used to broadcast content at scale, with no exchange between people.
How do I deactivate a community I created?
Only the person who created the community can deactivate it, from the community info screen. When it is deactivated, the linked groups stop being part of it but keep existing independently, with their messages preserved. Admins you promoted can manage groups and participants but cannot deactivate the community.
Can I sell inside a WhatsApp Community?
There is no payment system inside a WhatsApp Community. The offer is posted there, but the purchase happens on an external platform that generates the payment link and delivers the product to the buyer. In practice, WhatsApp works as a relationship and warm-up channel, and the digital products platform handles the transaction and delivery.
