Having thousands of Instagram followers doesn’t necessarily mean having an engaged audience. After all, what good is reaching a lot of people if only a few of them interact with what you post?

That’s where the Instagram engagement rate comes in. This metric helps you understand how much your audience interacts with you and whether your content is sparking interest.

With our free Instagram engagement rate calculator, you can find your rate in a few minutes. Just fill in the data from your posts to see the result.

Below, you will also learn how to use the tool, understand the calculation formula, find out what counts as a good engagement rate and discover a few strategies to improve your results.

What is the Instagram engagement rate calculator?

The Instagram engagement rate calculator is a tool that calculates the percentage of interactions a profile’s posts receive relative to its number of followers. It lets you measure how much your audience interacts with your content, taking into account metrics such as likes, comments, saves and shares.

With Hotmart’s calculator, you can enter the results of several posts to find the profile’s average engagement rate. The tool adds up the interactions, calculates the average per post and compares that number with the follower count.

This way, you can analyze your content’s performance without doing the math by hand. The tool also gives you a reading of the result, using approximate reference ranges for different account sizes.

What is the Instagram engagement rate?

The Instagram engagement rate is a metric that shows the share of interactions a profile receives relative to the size of its audience or the reach of its posts, depending on the calculation method used.

It helps you understand how people respond to your content. A profile with 5,000 followers can have a proportionally more active audience than one with 50,000.

What is the calculator for, and why use it?

The engagement rate calculator helps content creators, brands and entrepreneurs better understand the performance of their profiles.

The main advantages of using the tool are:

  • Track how your engagement evolves: compare results from different periods to see whether audience interaction is going up or down.
  • Find out which content works best: analyze post performance and identify the formats and topics that spark the most interest.
  • Assess the quality of interactions: see whether your audience actually takes part in conversations instead of just following the profile.
  • Analyze competitors and influencers: use public information to assess other profiles’ engagement before an influencer marketing partnership.
  • Support your sales strategy: if you sell online courses, ebooks or mentoring, tracking engagement can help you understand how your audience responds to the content that comes before an offer.

Keep in mind that a good engagement rate doesn’t guarantee sales. However, it can point to opportunities to strengthen your relationship with your audience and improve your content strategy.

How to use the Instagram engagement rate calculator

Using the Instagram engagement rate calculator takes just a few minutes. All you need is some information about the profile and the posts you want to analyze.

Here is the step by step.

1. Gather your post data

Start by choosing the posts you want to evaluate. A good option is to use your 10 most recent posts, since this shows average performance without depending on the result of a single post.

Write down the number of likes, comments, saves and shares the set of posts received.

Likes and comments can be checked on the posts themselves, depending on visibility settings. Saves and shares are only available to the account owner in Insights, the analytics feature offered to professional and creator accounts.

If you haven’t used Insights yet, you’ll find it in the professional dashboard of your Instagram account.

2. Fill in the fields and click calculate

Once you have the information, go back to the calculator and fill in the fields in this order:

  1. Followers: enter the profile’s current number of followers.
  2. Number of posts analyzed: enter how many posts are part of the analysis.
  3. Total likes: add up the likes on all the selected posts.
  4. Total comments: enter the sum of the comments received.
  5. Total saves (optional): add the total number of times the posts were saved.
  6. Total shares (optional): enter how many times the posts were shared.

The saves and shares fields are optional. If you don’t have access to this information, you can calculate the rate using only likes and comments.

After filling in the data, click Calculate engagement.

3. Interpret the result

The calculator shows three main pieces of information: the engagement rate as a percentage, the average number of interactions per post and an interpretation of the result.

This reading uses approximate reference ranges based on the profile’s number of followers. For example, a 3% rate can mean different things for an account with 3,000 followers and one with 300,000.

Further on, we’ll explain how to evaluate these numbers and what they reveal about your content’s performance.

How does the calculator work out the engagement rate?

To calculate the Instagram engagement rate, our tool adds up the likes, comments, saves and shares of the posts analyzed. Then it divides the total by the number of posts to find the average number of interactions and compares that value with the number of followers.

The engagement rate formula it uses is:

Engagement rate (%) = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100

Let’s look at a practical example.

Imagine a profile with 5,000 followers that wants to analyze its last 10 posts. In that period, the posts received:

  • 1,800 likes;
  • 150 comments;
  • 220 saves;

Adding these up gives us 2,300 interactions. Dividing that number by the 10 posts, we get an average of 230 interactions per post.

Now just divide 230 by the 5,000 followers and multiply by 100.

230 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 4.6%

In this example, the profile’s average engagement rate is 4.6%.

By considering several posts, the calculation gives a more representative view of the profile’s recent performance. Including saves and shares also captures interactions that go beyond likes and comments.

Why does the calculator use the number of followers?

There are different ways to calculate Instagram engagement. Two of the most common use either the number of followers or the reach of the posts as the base.

Our calculator uses the number of followers because it is public information you can check on any profile. This makes it easy to analyze your own accounts, competitors and influencers, and to compare with market benchmarks that use the same method.

Calculating by reach considers the number of accounts that saw a given post. Since this number is usually lower than the total number of followers, the rate calculated by reach is often higher.

The engagement rate by reach formula is: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100. For example, a post with 230 interactions and 3,000 accounts reached has a 7.67% rate by reach, while the same post, on a profile with 5,000 followers, has a 4.6% rate by followers.

That’s why you shouldn’t directly compare rates calculated by followers with rates calculated by reach. Although both help analyze performance, they answer different questions and use different bases.

Why can the result differ from other calculators?

If you use different tools to calculate Instagram engagement, you may get different results for the same profile. That’s because there is no single official formula for the engagement rate. Some tools only consider likes and comments, while others also include saves, shares or other types of interaction.

Hotmart’s calculator lets you add up these four metrics and averages several posts. Tools such as Modash and HypeAuditor use their own methodologies, which may rely on medians, specific periods or different comparison bases.

Another important factor is the number of posts analyzed. A calculation based on the last 10 posts can give a different result from one based on 30 posts.

So, more important than getting identical numbers in every tool is sticking to the same method when tracking your profile over time.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

There is no ideal engagement rate for every Instagram profile. The result depends on factors such as follower count, niche, post format, account type and calculation method.

That’s why a rate considered good for a creator with 2,000 followers can represent exceptional performance for a brand with 500,000.

Market studies help explain these differences. Here are some benchmarks published by specialized platforms:

Source Account type Calculation method Benchmark
Modash (accessed Oct 2026) Creators with 1,000 to 5,000 followers Median likes per post divided by followers Median of 1.00%
Modash (accessed Oct 2026) Creators with 10,000 to 50,000 followers Median likes per post divided by followers Median of 0.38%
HypeAuditor (accessed Oct 2026) Creators with 1,000 to 5,000 followers Median of likes + comments on the 30 most recent posts ÷ views or followers Average of 4.8%

Sources: Modash and HypeAuditor.

Notice how the numbers vary? That’s because these studies analyze different audiences and use their own methodologies. Modash’s numbers are lower because they only count likes and use the median. Hotmart’s calculator also adds comments, saves and shares and uses the average across posts, which is why its reference ranges sit above those values.

Small accounts (up to 10,000 followers)

For profiles with up to 10,000 followers, the calculator uses a reference range of 2% to 5%.

Smaller accounts tend to have proportionally higher rates because the audience usually has a closer relationship with the creator, as is the case with a nano influencer. This can encourage conversations, comments and other interactions.

If a profile with 5,000 followers has a 4% rate, for example, the result is within the range the tool uses.

Mid-sized accounts (10,000 to 100,000 followers)

For accounts with more than 10,000 and up to 100,000 followers, the reference is 1% to 3%.

As the audience grows, it’s natural for the profile to reach people with different levels of interest. Not every follower will see or interact with every post, which can lower the proportional rate.

In this scenario, it’s worth looking not only at the percentage but also at how interactions evolve and which posts drive the most participation.

Large accounts (over 100,000 followers)

For profiles with more than 100,000 followers, the calculator uses an approximate range of 0.5% to 2%.

On larger accounts, the rate tends to be proportionally lower, even when the absolute number of interactions is high.

A profile with 500,000 followers and a 1% rate, for example, can get an average of 5,000 interactions per post.

This doesn’t mean that posts with lower rates are necessarily worse. Audience size and strategy goals need to be part of the analysis.

How to interpret the calculator’s result

Once you know your engagement rate, the next step is to understand what to do with that information.

Rather than labeling the result as good or bad, it’s worth analyzing your audience’s behavior and spotting opportunities to improve your strategy.

A few points deserve attention:

  • Compare with your own history: track the rate over the weeks to spot upward or downward trends.
  • Analyze formats separately: Reels, carousels and static images can perform differently. See which ones generate the most interactions.
  • Investigate results below expectations: check whether the topics are still relevant, whether posting frequency changed or whether your content is reaching the right audience.
  • Look into results far above average: a viral Reel, a giveaway or an exceptional post can push the rate up temporarily.
  • Consider other metrics: reach, views, profile visits and clicks also help you understand performance, especially when your goal is to create business opportunities.

Remember that the engagement rate can go above 100% in specific situations, mainly when a post reaches many people beyond the follower base.

This happens because the formula counts the number of interactions, and the same person can take more than one action, such as liking, commenting, saving and sharing.

So, a rate above 100% doesn’t necessarily mean a calculation error. But it’s important to look at the context before reading the result as exceptional performance.

What affects the engagement rate on Instagram?

Several factors can affect the number of interactions a profile receives. Knowing these variables helps you interpret the results more accurately.

The main factors are:

  • Account size: profiles with smaller audiences tend to have proportionally higher rates.
  • Content format: Reels, carousels and images can encourage different types of interaction.
  • Niche: audience behavior varies according to interests and the topics covered.
  • Calculation method: using followers, reach or views as the base can produce different results.
  • Frequency and consistency: changes in your posting routine and in the best time to post on Instagram for your audience can affect your relationship with followers.
  • Inactive or bought followers: accounts that don’t interact grow the follower base without adding to engagement.
  • Sponsored or boosted content: paid campaigns, such as Instagram ads, can expand reach and change the number of interactions received.

That’s why it’s important to consider the context before comparing results from different profiles or periods.

How to increase your engagement rate on Instagram

If the calculator’s result was lower than you expected, a few changes to your strategy can help encourage audience participation.

Here are six tips to put into practice:

  • Get to know your audience: understand the main questions, interests and needs of your buyer persona to produce more relevant content.
  • Create posts worth saving and sharing: tutorials, checklists and educational content can encourage these interactions, which also count in our tool’s calculation.
  • Use calls to action: invite people to comment, share their experiences or send the post to someone who might be interested.
  • Explore interactive Stories features: polls, question boxes and other interactive social media posts help spark conversations with followers.
  • Reply to comments: join the conversations and show interest in your community’s questions and opinions.
  • Test formats and follow your Insights: identify which posts generate the most interaction and use what you learn to plan your next posts.

After a few weeks, use the engagement rate calculator again to see whether the changes made a difference in your results.

And if you want to go deeper, see how to build a marketing strategy that attracts and engages your audience.

How to calculate the engagement of another profile, such as a competitor or influencer

You can also use the engagement rate calculator to analyze the profiles of competitors, social media influencers and other content creators.

In this case, the calculation should only use publicly available information, such as follower count, likes and comments. Since saves and shares are not fully shown publicly, leave those fields blank.

The result will be a partial engagement rate, based on the interactions you can see.

Some profiles hide their like counts. In that case, a public analysis is limited to comments, and the result can’t be compared with profiles that show their likes.

So, what’s your engagement rate?

Now that you know how to calculate Instagram engagement, it’s easier to see why this metric deserves attention.

After all, having lots of followers doesn’t necessarily mean having an audience that takes part in conversations and shows interest in your content.

With the calculator, you can track the average interactions on your posts, spot opportunities for improvement and see how your strategy evolves over time.

Remember: there is no ideal engagement rate for every profile. What matters most is comparing your results with your own history, always using the same calculation method.

And if you create content to share your knowledge, an engaged audience can also be a business opportunity and a way to make money on Instagram.

With Hotmart, you can turn your expertise into online courses, ebooks, mentoring programs and communities, creating new ways to deliver value to the people who follow your work.

Frequently asked questions about the Instagram engagement rate calculator

Still have questions? Below, we answer some of the most common questions about the Instagram engagement rate calculator.

Is the engagement rate calculator free?

Yes. Hotmart's Instagram engagement rate calculator is free and can be used without signing up. The calculation happens in your browser: your data is not sent or stored.

What formula does the calculator use?

The calculator uses this formula: engagement rate (%) = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100. The calculation considers the average interactions of the posts analyzed relative to the profile's number of followers.

Does the calculator use followers or reach?

The calculator uses the number of followers as its base, because this information is public and makes it easier to compare profiles. Some tools calculate engagement by reach, considering the number of people who saw the content. Since the methods use different bases, their results shouldn't be compared directly.

How many posts should I use in the calculation?

Ideally, analyze several recent posts, such as the last 10. This way, you see an average performance and reduce the impact of a single post that received many more or many fewer interactions than the others.

Can the engagement rate go above 100%?

Yes. Since the formula adds up different interactions, the rate can go above 100% when the average number of likes, comments, saves and shares is higher than the number of followers. This can happen, for example, when a Reel reaches a much larger audience than the profile's follower base.

Does the calculator work for TikTok or other social networks?

This calculator was built to analyze Instagram engagement. Although other social networks also use interaction metrics, each platform has its own characteristics and benchmarks. That's why the result shouldn't be used as a direct benchmark for TikTok, YouTube or other networks.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

A good engagement rate depends on account size, profile type, niche and calculation method. As an approximate reference, our calculator uses ranges of 2% to 5% for accounts with up to 10,000 followers, 1% to 3% for accounts with 10,000 to 100,000 and 0.5% to 2% for larger profiles. The best approach is to track your own profile over time and compare results calculated the same way.
